6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices

6thgrade-homeschool-curriculum-choices-marythaIf you’ve made it to this post, you’re likely new to homeschooling and want to know what homeschool curriculum choices other people have.

Perhaps, you have been homeschooling for years and your search for new curriculum options ended here.

I get that.

Looking for a homeschool curriculum is enough to make you want to pull your hair out. So, I thought you’d appreciate this rundown of curricula that we are using this year.

Our homeschool is a concoction of different styles and methods.  We lean more towards Eclectic Homeschooling.  The books and resources we use are carefully hand-picked based on the needs and interests of our children as well as the current season of our family.  You will find that we have a variety in our homeschool curriculum choices.

If you are new to homeschooling, PLEASE, don’t let this post overwhelm you.  Rather, find ideas or inspiration.

For ease of reference, I have split this post into two sections.  One with a list for 6th Grade curriculum and another for Pre-K level.

Some of the links on this post contain affiliate links from which I’ll earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.  This will help me continue to provide future content. I only recommend products that we use and love.

Let’s get started.

Bible and Character

We love Apologia’s “What We Believe Series” and have been using it for years. This year, however, we’re trying something new – Wise Up in Proverbs by Positive ActionJoma will be teaching this subject and he is equally excited about the content of this Bible curriculum.

Wise Up encourages students to study the wisdom of God in Proverbs through the inductive Bible study.  Keefer is now in middle school. At 11 years old, he is faced with certain challenges – no longer a baby AND barely a teen.  He needs guidance in making wise choices in life.

This book will provide a structure on how to discuss topics and help both parents and children to dive deep into God’s word.

This is an affordable Bible curriculum and I’m happy that they also have a digital version. We purchased the Student Manual for $14.95 and the Teacher’s Manual for $22.95.  Head to ChristianBook.com for the printed copy.

Along with this, Keefer uses #Truth by Josh McDowell and the Abide Prayer Journal for his daily devotions.  #Truth is a 365-day devotional that is written for teens. It inspires with truths of God that teens will find relevant in their everyday life.

The Abide Prayer Journal is a perfect place for him to write his prayers and reflections during his quiet time.    It is a journal that I designed myself and had it professionally bound.  I’m still praying if I should sell these beauties.  In God’s perfect time.

In the meantime, you can grab a FREE copy of the Beloved Prayer Journal.  Print as many as you want.  However, please do not sell or redistribute whether in print or digital format.

Math

We’re sticking with Singapore Math for our 6th Grade Math curriculum. It has worked extremely well for us over the years. Here are the reasons why.

Singapore Math focuses on mastery. Gone are the days of fingers (and toes) counting or memorizing formulas. Concepts are intentionally laid down next to the other in a sequential way. Once the child masters a skillset, the future lessons are easier to understand. It’s like building a Lego structure. Every brick is carefully linked together to form a foundation.

This method encourages resilience and independence in children. On busy days, Keefer can work on his Math lessons with minimal help. There are times when I discuss with him the concepts using the Teacher’s Manual. Then off he goes. It takes him between 15-20 minutes to finish a day’s lesson.

We also love that it is challenging but at the same time not overwhelming. Keefer gained math-confidence in no time. We purchased the Singapore 5A and 5B textbook, workbook, and teacher’s manual from ChristianBook.com.

History

We are still using The Good and The Beautiful.

I know there are some conflicting reviews out there because the author is from LDS. So, I researched and talked to my husband to see whether this would be a great fit for our family.

Well, it’s been over a year since we used their curriculum. I have not come across anything that contradicts what we believe as Christians. If there would be any, it would be an opportunity for us to point our children towards Biblical truths.

This is not your typical History book.

TGTB History Year 2 has visually beautiful pages yet with academically strong content. Lessons may include audio dramatizations, copy work, matching games, timeline pages, literature, and board games. We love that the activity varies each time.

No more dry and predictable history lessons.

It also emphasizes building Christ-like character and basic Biblical principles in its lessons. It is easy to teach and requires very little prep time. Keefer loves that there are checkboxes that he can check off when he finishes a task.

We purchased the digital version for $40 which includes the coursebook, maps and images, audio dramatizations, history timeline, and timeline stickers.

The Explorers and Settlers Game, however, does not have a pdf version.  We bought it anyway because Keefer loves board games.  We bought the game for $11.99 plus $4 for shipping.  Surprisingly, it was delivered right at our doorstep after 2 weeks.

I highly encourage that you do your research before you take the plunge of purchasing The Good and the Beautiful – or for all your homeschool curriculum choices. Visit their website.  Download the sample pages of their History Year 2 Curriculum or their FREE Language Arts Curriculum (from Level 1 – 5) to give it a try.

Writing Skills for Today

writing-skills-for-today-marytha1

We’re switching to Writing skills for Today – Level C. This Charlotte Mason-inspired curriculum features picture study, memorization, grammar, composition, dictation, and poetry. This is our first time using this book. So far, it has been working well for us.

The lessons are short with only 2 lessons per week. It’s simple to use for both parents and students. You’ll only need one book and we purchased ours from Christianbook.com for $19.95.

Fixit Grammarhomeschool-curriculum-choices-fixit-grammar-book2-marytha

We purchased Fixit Grammar: Robin Hood last year but we didn’t get the chance to finish the book.  We will continue it this year by teaching Grammar 4 days a week.  It should take approximately 10-15 minutes. The lessons are short and include vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence diagramming.

I love how this program puts grammar knowledge in context using literature. Keefer has learned to proofread his writing. A habit he learned through Fixit Grammar where he looks for errors and corrects them.

The Fixit Grammar: Teacher’s Manual costs $19 at the IEW website. Along with it comes a printable digital download of the student book and grammar cards.  The link to the digital download is provided in the teacher’s manual.

Spectrum Spellinghomeschool-curriculum-choices-spectrum-spelling-grade6-marytha

Keefer is a natural speller. It’s a skill that he learned from reading various materials. Although, a separate spelling curriculum is not required.  We are using Spelling Spectrum to reinforce this skill in a fun and engaging way.

Keefer loves the puzzles and brainteasers that go along with the lessons. The program will cover diphthong, dictionary skills, irregular plural, Greek and Latin roots.

The digital format can be purchased for $11.99 at the Carson Dellosa website.  If you want a printed copy, you can get them from ChristianBook.com or Amazon.

Worldy Wise 3000homeschool-curriculum-choices-wordly-wise-book6-marytha

We use Worldly Wise 3000 Book 6 as a supporting resource to help build on vocabulary. This is another curriculum that Keefer can do independently. We’ve been using this for 3 years and we are loving it.

SAT Prep Testhomeschool-curriculum-choices-standardized-testing-grade6-marytha

One of our goals this year is to prepare Keefer for SAT. To help him ease into standardized testings, we will review and practice using Testing – Grade 6 book. This resource book helps with study skills, time management and builds student’s confidence through the practice tests. Unfortunately, it is no longer available on the Carson Dellosa website.  You can purchase Spectrum Test Practice for Grade 6 from Christianbook.

We will also be using Khan Academy’s SAT prep to help with the daily review.

Classical Literature

For Classical Literature, Keefer will be reading the following for his book report.

Science

homeschool-curriculum-choices-answers-genesis-science-inventions-technology-marytha

God’s Design for the Physical World: Inventions & Technology by Debbie & Richard Lawrence is designed with homeschoolers in mind.  It is easy to use and teaches Physical Science from a Biblical point of view.  With 2 lessons a week for 30-45 minutes, we can go through a book in one school year.

When you buy the Student Course Book ($24.99), you will have access to downloadable tests, worksheets, and experiments.

You can buy these from Christianbook or Answers in Genesis Bookstore.

Computer Science

Keefer is interested in video and sound production.  So, this year, he will be learning Premiere Pro CC 2019 through Linkedin Learning.

It is similar to Skillshare, Coursera, Udemy, and Futurelearn.  We love that sessions can be done through a desktop or app on your phone.  It also provides students with a learning path to show their progress.  Plus, students get a certificate after finishing a course.

TIP: Certificates are a great addition to your homeschool portfolios.

The monthly subscription starts at $26.24.  There are thousands of courses to choose from in Linkedin Learning.  Click here to start your 1-month-free-trial.
